The ceremony

The spaces licensed at the RIBA for civil ceremonies offer diversity of both style and size. The Aston Webb Room's leather-lined walls and Indian laurel wood joinery presents the ideal opportunity for more intimate ceremonies of 40. The Lutyens Room's full-height windows and RIBA portraits create a light and airy space for 70 guests, while the Jarvis Foyer and delightful RIBA Gallery provides the perfect area for 120-140 guests. For larger ceremonies our wood-panelled, tiered Jarvis Hall can seat 250. For a more unusual setting, why not consider our stunning First Floor staircase.

Florence Hall Wedding

What the happy couples said....

Tom and Cherie

Tom and Cherie met in 2007 in South London through mutual friends. They have lived in London throughout their relationship and love the city as it’s “part of their story”. The couple share an interest in architecture and the 1920s era and were drawn to RIBA Venues having attended events there on many occasions.

From choosing the venue as the location for their special day, Tom and Cherie worked closely with their dedicated venue co-ordinating team at RIBA Venues to create the magical day they were looking for. “The team were so professional and offered great advice and service. They made planning our wedding feel like a collaborative endeavour,” Cherie says.

On 4th October 2015 the big day arrived and Tom and Cherie were married in front of 70 guests in the venue’s front gallery. “Guests arrived at 1pm for Prosecco and then gathered for the ceremony at 2pm,” says Cherie. “After the ceremony most of our guests headed for RIBA Venue’s outside terrace for some sunshine and fresh air, before coming back to the Florence Hall for the wedding breakfast.”

The couple opted for sharing plates for their wedding breakfast as they liked how sociable the concept was. “We wanted interesting food, mostly vegetarian with some fish options,” says Cherie. “The food was fantastic, many of our guests commented that they had never eaten so well at a wedding. We’re big fans of chef Yotam Ottolenghi and mentioned this to the chef at RIBA Venues as a reference for the style of food we would like for the day.”

There was a jazz pianist and vocalist who played as the guests arrived and also led guests in a sing-along of ‘how sweet it is to be loved by you’ during the ceremony. Tom and Cherie curated their own jazz play list for the wedding breakfast and a mix of soul, blues, Motown and reggae for when the 50 extra evening guests arrived. They hired a gypsy swing band called the Kings Cross Hot Club for the evening. “They are a band that we’d heard play at numerous venues over the years, in part by chance, and we knew we loved their style,” says Cherie.

Cherie says: “The choice of venue in many respects guides the style of wedding you will have. I would say it is the most important choice you make in planning the day. If you don’t have a wedding planner it really helps to work with an experienced and professional venue team, their advice and guidance will be very valuable.

“We can’t thank the whole team enough for their great advice and fantastic service in a stunning building,” says Cherie.

And of the three most cherished moments of the day? Cherie adds: “Seeing each other at the beginning of the ceremony, being pronounced ‘married’ and the five quiet minutes we had together after the ceremony.”

A beautiful Autumnal wedding...

Cheryl and Alan on Terrace

Cheryl and Alan

After proposing in Cape Town, South Africa, in the summer of 2010, Cheryl and Alan finally tied the knot with a civil ceremony and reception at the RIBA. It was a beautiful sunny September day when family and friends from Malaysia and the UK came together for the celebrations. The drinks reception took place on the sweeping stairs to the sounds of the Skara string quartet as guests made their way to the RIBA Terrace to enjoy delicious champagne and canapés before dining in the Florence Hall.

Cheryl Allkins says: 'We wanted a venue which was modern with a hint of subtle extravagance and The RIBA was just the right level of sophistication we had in mind. I was instantly attracted to the building's elegance, its superb high ceilings and the intimate roof terrace was definitely the winning factor.

Having our London wedding ceremony and reception at The RIBA was simply perfect. The practical support and advice from both the venue team and the caterers Ampersand was invaluable. All our guests were very impressed with the whole experience and it was a truly happy day.'
